Askival of Strathearn is dedicated to the craft of bespoke/custom-made tailoring delivering the original and ultimate experience in clothing, along with a construction of high quality. The tailor’s specialty is the kilt and the waistcoat, and honours the traditional tailoring techniques and processes used by the regimental master tailors for the ceremonial highland dress. The Askival of Strathearn kilt is an heirloom and a work of art, epitomising an enduring tradition, unsurpassed technique and unique style. There is often an emotional attachment to a kilt whatever the construction and condition, and using depth of knowledge and skill, restorations, alterations and cleaning of the kilt are carried out whenever possible. We also source other handcrafted, high quality and unique accessories to the Highland attire. Other works of art include the traditional handcrafted plaid, stole and sash. Their fringes are beautifully knotted in a lattice fashion or “purled”, creating an exclusive hand-twisted design. These fringes are distinctive, and require precision, focus and patience to create them. The Askival of Strathearn Kilt College provides master classes, learning sets and remote ongoing support ensuring: the craft lives on; the tailored kilt maintains its integrity; and remains an accessible choice. Presentations and workshops on the heritage and the craft are available to tourist groups and other interested organisations. On behalf of Perth and Kinross Council, presented a little tailored kilt in the Strathearn muted tartan to the Duke and Duchess of Strathearn on their visit to Strathearn (2014) for Prince George.

Brian first discovered his hidden artistic skills in 2005 when his first tartan design was chosen by the British Prime Minister of the day to celebrate and mark the 2005 Gleneagles G8 Conference. Since then Brian – combining his work as Director of the Scottish Tartans Authority and now, Consultant to that organisation – continued to attract very many private and corporate high-profile design commissions. In 2013, in recognition of his valuable services to the tartan industry in Scotland, he was appointed MBE in an investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace. Now widely regarded as a leading expert in the modern art of tartan design, his detailed research and highly innovative ideas have won praise around the world. His 2007 book ‘Tartans’ for the National Trust of Scotland’ was an immediate success and he is now working on a modern Highland Dress ‘encyclopaedia’. His entertaining and humorous presentations on the ‘Global Symbolism of Tartan’ have proved extremely popular and have taken him to North America, Europe and Asia. A few handfuls of his designs – numbering over 150 now – can be seen on his Tartan Ambassador website. Left (top to bottom): Just three of Brian’s designs.
