  • Notes: Garnet and black are the official colours of the University of South Carolina (USC). They were first used by the football team in a game against Furman University on Christmas Eve 1892. In 2010, Marianne Bickle, PhD, Director at the USC Centre for Retailing, started the process of establishing USC's own tartan incorporating the school's colours. The students, faculty, staff and alumni chose the final design from a pool of three finalists during the spring semester of 2013. An important element of the tartan's production is its philanthropic nature, as a portion of the proceeds from sales of the tartan will be used to fund student scholarships.
